Dr. David Reed
Vitreoretinal Surgeon
Dr. David Reed is a retina specialist who diagnoses and treats conditions affecting the back of the eye—including macular degeneration, diabetic eye disease, retinal tears and detachments, and other problems that can threaten a person’s sight. He offers the full range of treatments for retinal disease, from advanced eye injections and laser procedures to minimally invasive surgery. For more than a decade, he has cared for patients across the South Shore and Cape Cod, earning the trust of his patients and the respect of the many physicians who refer to him. Dr. Reed founded Polaris Retina to build a practice centered entirely on the patient experience—personal attention, prompt appointments, and care delivered with the time and focus every patient deserves.
Dr. Reed’s path to medicine began in engineering. He earned his undergraduate degree in engineering sciences and a master’s in biochemical engineering from Dartmouth College before going on to medical school at The Ohio State University College of Medicine, where he graduated magna cum laude. He completed his residency training in ophthalmology at UCLA’s Jules Stein Eye Institute, one of the most rigorous ophthalmology programs in the country, followed by a two-year fellowship in diseases and surgery of the retina at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia, whose retina fellowship is regarded as among the finest in the field. He is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology.
Throughout his career, Dr. Reed has been deeply involved in research and teaching. He has authored numerous published studies and textbook chapters that help shape how retinal conditions are treated, and he worked with a team of physicians and scientists at Google to develop artificial intelligence that can analyze retinal photographs—technology aimed at detecting eye disease earlier. He has also traveled abroad as a volunteer surgeon, including a week in Zambia spent training a local surgeon and operating aboard a flying eye hospital.
The guiding principle behind Polaris Retina—its North Star—is simple: every patient receives the care Dr. Reed would want for his own family. He listens carefully to each patient, explains each diagnosis and treatment in plain language, answers questions fully, and makes sure patients feel heard, informed, and comfortable with their care. He combines the precision of his engineering background with a genuine focus on the person in front of him.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Reed enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife and three children, including camping, hiking, and coaching his children’s sports teams. Having grown up in the Boston area, he takes special pride in caring for patients across the South Shore, and he is committed to providing thoughtful, attentive care for his patients’ vision and health.
